Recommended NLP Books, DVD's and MP3's

While we recommend you attend an 'NLP taster' or NLP training before you read an NLP book we're aware that this is not always possible!

Therefore the following NLP books are our recommended reading for anyone starting to want to   know more about NLP.

I've divided this section into 4 sections, see below. We also have a more comprehensive section of book on our NLP book store site.

Also SEE our Amazon NLP Book store

And our sister site  NLP CD & DVD's store has one of the largest and best selection of NLP CD & DVD's available online in the UK. If you click on the DVD images on the left hand you will be directed there.

If you want a simple, straight forward, enjoyable and short eBook (and related CD and MP3) on some of the concepts of NLP then I strongly recommend "Inside Your Mind" by NLP trainer Stephanie Philp. Otherwise read on....

Section 1 - Top UK written books which work well for a traditionally 'logical' mindset. All are good within this context and I particularly recommend the NLP workbook.

Section 2 - Richard Bandler and John Grinder's books. A must read for someone genuinely interested in NLP. I particularly like Frogs into Princes  and Trance-formations. (although both are out of print and are expensive second hand)

Section 3 - Two good introduction to NLP books. Tony Robbins 'Awaken the Guide Within' is one of the first NLP type book I read and is a very good basic introduction as is  'The New Technology of achievement' edited by Steve Andreas.

Section 4 - Recommended NLP DVD's. If you genuinely want the best in NLP Richard Bandler's DVD's are a must. These are expensive in relation in books but very good value in relation to going on a course, or for a much wider selection visit  our NLP CD & DVD's store.

The Amazon widget cloud below is genuinely worth a look, most are really good (and even the less good ones are inexpensive.) However my recommendations follow in section 1

Section 1

NLP Workbook: A Practical Guide to Achieving the Results You Want by Joseph O'Connor

I like this because its comprehensive and full of exercises. However is does lack some of the 'magic' of Richard and John's books. It's a good compliment (different and therefore adds value) to our own NLP Training.

The Amazon description is as follows - Neuro-Linguistic Programming is based on the idea that the human mind is a sort of computer - our verbal and body language are the programmes which allow us to change our own thoughts and influence other people e.g. using body language and speech patterns to create instant rapport with someone else. We already use such techniques on a sub-conscious level - NLP simply helps us crystallize what we already know.

Introducing NLP Neuro-Linguistic Programming by Joseph O'Connor and John Seymour

I completed my original practitioner and master practitioner with John Seymour, and while in many ways I've moved on I'm happy to acknowledge the contribution Joseph and John have made to NLP.

Neurolinguistic Programming (NLP) is one of the fastest growing developments in applied psychology. This handbook describes in simple terms what gifted people do differently, and enables the reader to learn these patterns of excellence. This approach gives the practical skills used by outstanding communicators. Excellent communication is the basis of creating excellent results.

The NLP Coach by Wendy Jago and Ian McDermott

Excellent NLP book, which includes a focus on coaching - just don't expect anything new!

Section 2 - Richard Bandler and John Grinder's books. A must read for someone genuinely interested in NLP. I particularly like Frogs into Princes  and Trance-formations. (although both are out of print and are expensive being second hand)

Frogs into Princes by Richard Bandler and John Grinder

A transcript of an early Richard and John seminar its a 'must read' for anyone with a true interest in NLP.

This work covers Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), a model of human experience and communication. Using the principles of NLP, the book asserts that it is possible to describe any human activity in a detailed way that allows the reader to make many changes quickly and easily. It claims that using the techniques of NLP one can learn to: cure phobias and other unpleasant feeling responses; help children and adults with "learning disabilities" overcome these limitations; eliminate unwanted habits, eg. smoking, drinking, over-eating and insomnia; and make changes in the interactions of couples, families and organizations so that they function in ways that are more satisfying and productive.

Trance-formations by Richard Bandler and John Grinder

This is still my favourite book on hypnosis and while its expensive second hand I recommend you get a copy while you still can.

Really good book on hypnosis!! - Highly recommended

The Structure of Magic 1: a Book About Language and Therapy by Richard Bandler and John Grinder

This book demands a lot of understanding, but will be very rewarding when you study it and put it in context with all the rest of the stuff you really understand about NLP... In summary, not a good first book to read on the topic - but a cracker to get down to the bedrock, when you get fed up with

The Structure of Magic II by Richard Bandler and John Grinder

I can't remember reading this...except that I remember Richard and John dedicating it to Steve Gilligan as the 'best hypnotist in the world'.....

Reviewer: A reader from Milan, Italy What you REALLY have to know before reading this book is what NLP is. It's an AMAZING book for those like me who want to know what's "behind" the magic of NLP shown in the previous book. It's a little difficult to manage for those who do not know the basis, but I think you can manage it anyway! Great content, Great author, Great (as always) style.

Time for a Change by Richard Bandler

To me this is a hypnosis book, a transcript of a very good hypnotic seminar.

An Amazon reviewer: "This book is fantastic... it is extremely easy to read, understand and even use... He has written it in the way he teaches. It is a lot of fun to read, things that i used to find confusing suddenly become clear... didn't it? A must buy!"

I agree.

Using Your Brain - for a CHANGE

A book I found difficult to read at first but keep going back to as it gives a very good description of how Richard works.

Insider's Guide to Sub-modalities by Richard Bandler and Will MacDonald

When I first started NLP I found the concept of sub-modalities difficult to grasp. This book helped me a lot.

An Amazon  reader from England described it as follows - "Despite its relatively small size (just 116 pages) this is undoubtedly one of the KEY texts for anyone wanting an in depth understanding of NLP. Edited by the late, great Will MacDonald, the book includes half a dozen lengthy transcripts of sessions featuring both Will and Richard Bandler. There are full instructions for 20 practical exercises."

I agree.

Magic in Action by Richard Bandler

Transcripts of Richard helping clients make changes. A classic in that its a transcript of Richard doing 1:1 work with clients. It shows actual language he uses.

It makes a very good companion to the  The Marshall Tapes DVD which is a DVD of Richard doing 1:1 work with clients

Section 3 - Two good introduction to NLP books.

Awaken the Giant Within by Tony Robbins

Shows readers how to clarify their personal values, resolve internal conflicts, master emotions, and overcome debilitating habits.

This was one of the first books on NLP (well Tony calls in NAC) and while a bit 'soul less' is a very pragmatic introduction to the subject.

NLP: the New Technology of Achievement by Steve Andreas (editor)

Reveals how to use the techniques of neuro-linguistic programming to achieve success in business and life.

Again one of the first book on NLP I read which gives a very practical and useful introduction.

Highly recommended.
